Its plot takes place in an indeterminate time and in an indeterminate place, and is entirely focused on the inner life of the main character (part of the narrative is devoted to the hero's imagination, which takes place on a sea island with a lighthouse). The film, which convincingly deals with the dark sides of the human psyche and which, among other things, also touches on racism, appeared only sporadically in cinemas and on television. Because of this, he unjustly found himself among the half-forgotten works of Czech cinematography.

Her only way to communicate with this picture however is via the TV screen, and her love can only be communicated through dreaming.

Shot in 1997 and premiered at Documenta XI in 2002, An Estranged Paradise displays many of Yang's signature motifs — crisp black-and-white 35mm cinematography, storylines that blur contemporaneity with traditional stylistics, homages to/revisions of genre cinema akin to the early work of his influences Jean-Luc Godard and Jim Jarmusch — while also reflecting his early studies as a painter, notably in a prologue that muses on the traditional methods and subjectivity of Chinese landscape painting. The idiot goes now to the intellectual for his sexual needs. The wife can't take this anymore and forces her man to take a choice: Vova out, or she will go.
