“A man can be himself only so long as he is alone; and if he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom; for it is only when he is alone that he is really free.” - Arthur Schopenhauer, Essays and Aphorisms.

Gomunkulus (1988) by Aleksandr Karpov, this film is another example of youth alienation and the presentation of the father figure as an extension of the Soviet system. This can be seen in various quasi-prophetic scenes about the disintegration of the authoritarian or parental system. The film shows us this from the point of view of a teenage girl who, together with other children and teenagers, forms a group of 'outsiders' who consciously reject the "systematic Oedipus". Although the film has an important layer of social and political criticism, it also diverges freely in the dilapidation of our protagonist, who begins a journey of mental crises, hallucinations, and depersonalisation in a way that only Chernukha can offer us. This makes it a hopeless but important film to watch, as it gives us a psychotic surprise and multilayered criticism.
